Our Client is a large, market leader in the packaging industry, they are currently looking to recruit a Shipping Manager to join their team.

You will be responsible for the management of shipping lines and freight forwarders used by the company, ensuring these shipping lines and freight forwarders meet the expectations of the company and its customers so that orders can be fulfilled on time, in full, every time. 

The ideal candidate will be from a recycling or packaging background and have vast experience within the shipping industry, strong negotiation skills with the ability to ensure shipping capacity meets export demand. The role will include UK and European Travel (approx. monthly). 

Responsibilities / Requirements:

  • 1 Direct report
  • Reporting to the Sales Director
  • Negotiating allocations of containers and rates with shipping lines and freight forwarders against a pre-agreed monthly target and budget as set by the sales director
  • Establishing contracts where possible with shipping lines and freight forwarders to fix container numbers and rates for a defined period
  • Conducting regular visits with shipping lines and freight forwarders to discuss allocation, rates and service
  • Advising the export team on allocation of export tonnage, ensuring the most effective shipping port based on geography and rates
  • Acting as the point of the escalation for any shipping issues from the export team to ensure orders are fulfilled
  • Dealing with shipping lines and freight forwarders to resolve any issues including demurrage charges, discrepancies with shipping documentation including bills of lading, detention issues, free time and invoice queries
  • Discuss extensions to free time with shipping lines and freight forwarders where required
  • Where necessary discuss and resolve any marine insurance queries or requirements with the Group Head Office
  • Produce regular reports for key stakeholders outlining key performance metrics as agreed with the Sales Director
  • Keep abreast of key market and legislative changes with the export and shipping industries and advise the company accordingly

  • An advanced level of leadership is required – dealing with strategies, results, leading, giving judgement and growth

Ideally our client would like candidates to have:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience within the shipping industry
  • Ideally educated to further education level 
  • Shipping software knowledge is desirable
  • Vast experience within the shipping industry 
  • Strong negotiator with excellent communication skills, both verbal and written 
  • Export legislation knowledge 
  • Excellent IT skills with high competency required for most Microsoft office applications
  • Commercial contract awareness
  • Recycling or waste industry knowledge would be an advantage 
  • Member of the Institute of Chartered Institute of Shipbrokers is desirable
