Packaging Development Manager
Our client is made up of a select group of brands specialising in the creation of high quality personal care and beauty products for the consumer and trade market. They focus on the design, manufacture and distribution of product in its three key operating functions; Brands (owned and licenced), Private Label Supply and Contract Manufacturing.
The company’s customer base ranges from key multiple drugstore, grocery and fashion retailers to premium brands throughout the UK & growing international markets, currently 40 countries worldwide.
The company has a reputation for exceptional customer service and consistently leads the way forward in product and brand development and manufacturing.
Ranging in format and market position within several key health + beauty categories including; personal bath, shower and bodycare, haircare, male grooming, skincare, fine fragrance and baby + maternity. Recent company acquisitions have also extended the companies capabilities into home fragrance formats; candles, reed diffusers and room fragrances.
This is an exciting opportunity to lead the packaging development support team (5 Packaging NPD Co-ordinators) for the Group.
This role has responsibility for and accountability for developing fit for purpose packaging. To lead and support all packaging development across the Group.
To lead a high performing Packaging Team in a fast paced NPD driven manufacturing business.
Suppliers -Working with Purchasing Team to identify new supplier sources.
Assessment and auditing of new suppliers to understand fit and capabilities
Attendance at trade fairs
Leading suppliers to present new and innovative packaging solutions
Pre-risk – Assessing all componentry for suitability for formulation, production processing and supply chain .Sign off NPD projects from a packaging risk point
Accountability for packaging design and artwork ensuring it is technically correct and uses suitable printing methods.
Attending print passes and colour matching as required
Technical Specifications – ensure the team have robust and accurate full technical component and manufacturing specications process is in place
Product Tooling – Lead on any projects for component tooling
Undertake cost engineering projects on packaging alternatives
Regulations – continual monitoring of Reach and Packaging regulations (including Global Requirements)
All new projects through risk analysis identify potential issues and manage with suppliers and production
Analyse and resolve packaging related production issues. Lead follow up actions with suppliers
Quality- working closely with the quality team on supplier and production issues
Lead regular meeting with the production and quality teams to develop proactive management of issues.
Analysing testing requirements and reviewing results to determine fit for purpose packaging
Continually reviewing testing methods and reviewing existing protocol
Working with suppliers to understand what testing they undertake
Review and understand customer supply chain requirements
Visit customer depots as necessary
Ensure outer packaging is fit for purpose for intended distribution channel through robust testing, trials and development
Leading and supporting the Packaging team in training key areas
Skills and experience required
Excellent communication skills operating within a customer focused, commercial environment
Minimum 7 years’ experience in packaging development technology within a fast paced FMCG market, beauty & personalcare, gifting or retail
