Overview of the role
Global Product Development at WBA is more than just a career; it’s about passion for products, innovation & discovery. It’s about a real desire to turn great ideas into best-selling products for our market leading Boots Brands including No7, Soap & Glory, Botanics & Soltan.
Based at our Head Office site in Nottingham, you will work in our dedicated packaging development team to bring new concepts to life, own them all the way through their development and into customer’s hands.
You will be involved from the seeds of a new product idea giving you the opportunity to influence the packaging solution from the off and champion innovative solutions that will delight our customers.
You will manage the design, technical specification, cost, validation and global compliance of new packaging keeping the customer at the heart of decision making. You will liaise with a wide network of internal and external stakeholders to achieve this within agreed timescales.
As Packaging Technologist, you will work as part of a cross functional team to scope and deliver new products for a specific Category/Brand at pace, to target costs and WBA quality/compliance standards.
You will understand the Brand strategy and consumer needs intimately and use this knowledge to propose innovative packaging solutions which delight consumers and drive growth for WBA Global Consumer brands.
You will use your deep scientific and technical packaging expertise to develop packaging from concept to manufacturing scale-up, delivering right first time, on time.
You will act as technical lead on bespoke packaging tooling projects as well as sourcing existing packaging solutions for our core suppler base. Some project will require you to design and complete an internal technical testing program and for others you will need to drive our suppliers to do this on our behalf.
100% right first time accuracy of final packaging specifications, manufacturing and compliance documentation to meet our global technical standards.
You will be accountable for identifying and managing packaging technical risk and escalation to senior stakeholders as appropriate. Stakeholders include: Senior Packaging/Formulation/Claims Managers, Head of Product Delivery, Global Category Directors, Senior Brand Managers, Global Sourcing and Supply Managers, Group IP, Head of QSR and QSR Managers.
You will be accountable for packaging lifecycle management including investigating customer complaints, identifying technical improvements and delivering corrective actions.
Our Ideal Candidate
- A graduate in Science or Technology with experience in a relevant packaging area.
- Minimum of 3 years packaging development experience
- Proven track record developing packaging from design concept to market, ideally within FMCG environment.
- An ability to clear communicate technical subjects / concepts to non-technical audiences verbally and in writing.
- Excellent knowledge of key packaging technologies, print processes, artwork, origination and intellectual property requirements.
- Experience of tooling new pack shapes
- Proven ability to manage risk, priorities and overall timings for complex technical projects.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- A good understanding of the value chain, component manufacturing and filling processes
